Objective:To demonstrate application of a figure eight splint.

Script
"Hi, my name is … and I'm with the ski patrol. Is it alright if I examine you and see what we can do to help you out?"
Initiates Standard Precautions   
Exposes/visualizes injured area to determine that a figure eight is appropriate.  
Places patient in a sitting position.  
Assesses .   
Related
Places one cravat around each shoulder (over and under the armpit); ensures thatthe cravat is not directly over the fracture site and that front of cravat has wide band.  
Crosses ends of cravats that are behind patient to make a figure eight.  
Tightens cravats so that the position of the shoulders is the same as if the patientwere sitting normally (shoulders should not be pulled all the way back).  
Ties cravats with square knots, ensuring that the shoulders are in normal position.  
Reassesses

Treats for shock as indicated  
Prepares patient for transport
